In-House Lab Services Q&A

Why do I need in-house lab testing?

In-house lab testing is a routine part of preventive health care. The Women's Health Group, P.A. team also orders labs if you experience certain symptoms, or if you have a personal or family history of serious diseases. You may need in-house lab services to:

  • Diagnose an infection
  • Check your blood sugar
  • Check your hormone levels
  • Evaluate your cholesterol levels
  • Check for cancerous biomarkers
  • Evaluate your liver and kidney functions

At The Women's Health Group, P.A., you can get almost all of your laboratory needs in-house, which saves you time and helps you get results faster.

Which type of lab test do I need?

Your dedicated practitioner at The Women's Health Group, P.A. orders labs based on the type of information they need. Depending on your health, your in-house lab service testing may include:

  • Urinalysis
  • Pap smear
  • Uterine biopsy
  • Hemoglobin A1C
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel

If you’re experiencing menopause-related symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, weight fluctuations, or hot flashes, the team may request a blood draw to check your hormone levels.

How do I prepare for laboratory testing?

The team lets you know about any special preparations you may need to make before your in-house laboratory testing at The Women's Health Group, P.A.. Some of the common ways to prepare include:

  • Letting your doctor know about all of the medications and supplements you take
  • Avoiding scheduling a Pap test during your menstrual period
  • Having a full bladder before a urinalysis
  • Fasting before certain blood tests

If you were previously under the care of a doctor at another practice, it’s helpful to request your medical records, too. This way, The Women's Health Group, P.A. has a comprehensive view of your personal medical history and a baseline for which to compare your current labs.

When do I get my lab results back?

Because in-house lab testing is performed in the same facility as your doctor, you usually get your results back quickly. Most results need to be reviewed by a provider before they can be released to the patient.

Pathology testing and certain blood testing can take a few days to process. But the pathology or lab technician sends your results to your doctor as quickly as possible. The team calls you as soon as your results are in and, if needed, schedules you for a follow-up visit.
